and 16 inches in a diameter—we went into the church in expectation of getting a tune played it being remarkable for a stop called Vox Humena—but the musician was a little haughty and we left him— this church was built in 1540—the inner door is supported by thirty pillars of twenty one feet circumference adorned with the arms of those who have served the community and some trophies of war, Spanish colours, &ca.—some of the windows are painted with ancient elegance—this town is also remarkable for the art of printing being first discovered here by a native one Lawrence Costar an alderman of the city who struck upon it in 1440 as he was walking in the wood and with his knife and a little bark of beech tree laid the foundation of the art of printing—opposite this church lives a bookseller who is possessed of the first, second and third essay of said Costar but being abed and rather surly he refused shewing them—we were introduced to the clerk of the town, a

Esta iglesia fue edificada en 1540; el interior está sostenido por treinta columnas de 21 pies de circunferencia, adornadas con los blasones de aquellos que han servido a la comunidad, y algunos trofeos de guerra, estandartes españoles, etc. Algunas de las ventanas están pintadas con elegancia antigua. Esta ciudad es también famosa porque el arte de la imprenta fue descubierto aquí por primera vez por uno de sus habitantes de nombre Laurens Coster, un Regidor de la ciudad, quien lo inventó en 1440 mientras se paseaba por el bosque y con su navaja y un poco de corteza de haya, estableció las bases del arte de la imprenta. Frente a la iglesia vive un librero que posee el primer, segundo y tercer ensayo del mencionado Coster, pero estando en cama y de mal humor, se negó a enseñarlos.
