We rode round it—it is fortified, has a deep wet ditch and ramparts faced with brick, supported by twenty six bastions and eight gates with towers, semicircular or octogonal—we stopped at a coffehouse built out in the harbour giving a full view of the shipping, &c large canals run thro' all the principal streets—it is supposed to contain about 27,000 houses and 281,000 inhabitants—visited the theatre—Mr. and Mrs. Bingham—visited several churches—the Greek chapel—a small apartment in a dwellinghouse ornamented after their custom, capable of containing about 100—from thence to the Armenians—both worship in their own language—it is neat and will hold 150.—the upperpart where the priest is stationed is ornamented with paintings—the resurrection in front—annunciation on the right—birth on the leftfour evangelists above and in the centre of the arch, a doveemblem of The HolyGhost—cieling azure adorned with

Dimos una vuelta por la ciudad; está fortificada, rodeada por un profundo foso y murallas revestidas de ladrillos, sostenidas por 26 baluartes y ocho puertas con torres semicirculares u octogonales. Nos detuvimos en un café construido en las afueras del puerto, desde donde se aprecia una extensa vista de las embarcaciones, etc. Amplios canales atraviesan todas las calles principales; se supone que posee unas 27.000 casas y 281.000 habitantes. Visitamos el teatro, el Sr. Y la Sra. Bingham, varias iglesias: la capilla griega, un pequeño apartamento en una vivienda decorada según su rito, tiene capacidad para unas cien personas. De ahí a la de los armenios; ambos celebran el culto en su propio idioma. Está cuidada y tiene capacidad para ciento cincuenta personas. La parte de arriba donde se sitúa el sacerdote está decorada con pinturas alusivas: en el frente, la Resurrección; la Anunciación a la derecha; la Natividad a la izquierda; arriba, los cuatro Evangelistas y en el centro del arco, una paloma, símbolo del "Espíritu Santo".
