Ferryman, which three are in one, we were under the necessity of putting up for the night. On the 12th. early in the morning we crossed the ferry and proceeded to the town of Rotterdam which lies on the north of the Maes about twelve or fifteen miles from the sea—the streets are spacious, the canals large and fine admitting vessels of any burthen to the centre of the city and to the doors of the merchants — as you approach it has a singularly pleasing appearance—tops of chimnies and masts of ships huddled together—a very great number of wellbuilt houses—We breakfasted, by invitation, with Mr. Roach, our fellowpassenger from Harwich, whose ,1 mily reside in this place—we were treated with every mark of attention and civility both by him and his family— Mrs Roach and sister—they accompanied us to the Workhouse,
