Your proposal to have 2 Companies of such men attached to your Corps as Pontoners, appears to me a scheme will worthy of the serious consideration of Government ; and, if adopted, will be extremely benef icial to the service—Such men would construit for you every kind of Boat & every kind of Bridge; and, if necessary cut the materials out of the adjoining woods. They would also make the necessary Cordage, & execute the Iron work on the Spot. Thus turning to use in every situation, every resource the Country might afford. They would also, occasionally, be of very great service in constructing f ortifications: particularly in the Artificers Work, and in raising & transporting materials and in every think when the common mechanic powers are to be applied.

N. B.—Much more might be said upon this subject, were. Fortunately, such a Corps to be adopted — I had forget to mention that we constructed two Bridges across the Hudson's River, the last was begun & finished in one night.

La proposición de V. de tener 2 compañías de tales hombres asignados al Cuerpo de V. como pontoneros, me parece un proyecto muy de seria consideración por parte del Gobierno; y si se adoptara será sumamente beneficioso para el servicio. Estos hombres construirían para V. todo tipo de embarcación y toda clase de puentes y, si es necesario, cortarían los materiales de los bosques cercanos. También fabricarían el cordaje necesario y ejecutarían el herraje en el sitio mismo, utilizando de este modo, en cada situación, todo recurso que el país pueda ofrecer. Ocasionalmente, también serían de gran utilidad en la construcción de fortificaciones, particularmente en el trabajo de los artificieros; en reunir y transportar materiales y en todo donde se utilicen fuerzas mecánicas corrientes.
