Dear Sir.
As your object has been toujours le méme; so the Spirit of my Zeal for that object for twent 21 year past (during eleven of which I have acted with you) has been always the same both in its direction & in its degree, and so continúes at present. When therefore you mentioned to me certain Stipulations, which Persons, with whom you was in Treaty, suggested for those who were now to be employ'd by them: I own that I felt myself picqued; and when whilst I was under the feeling of that sensation, you wished me to form some appreciation of my services, I own that I could not but feel, and could not withold myself, from comparing my past services with these new ones thus stipulated for. But upon reflection, reprobating all such stipulations, I am ashame that any feel could, for a moment, make me put my services in comparison in the same scale with any such stipulation. To put therefore that Matter and Myself, on the true ground of Honor, not to be misunderstood. I have enclosed within this secret & private Note, an open and avowed Tendure of my services by the letter which I have addressed to you in a public capacity.

Estimado Señor:
Así como el objetivo de V. ha sido siempre el mismo, así mi celo para ese fin durante los pasados 21 años (once de los cuales he actuado junto con V.) ha sido siempre igual, tanto en su orientación como en su alcance, y así continúa en la actualidad. Por lo tanto cuando V. me habló de ciertas condiciones que personas con las que V. estaba en trato sugirieron para aquellos que ahora han de ser empleados por ellos, reconozco que me sentí ofendido; y cuando mientras yo estaba con esa sensación V. me pidió hacer alguna estimación de mis servicios, reconozco que no pude más que pensar y comparar mis servicios pasados con estos nuevos así estipulados. Pero al reflexionar, reprobando todas estas condiciones, estoy avergonzado de que cualquier sentimiento haya podido, por un momento, hacerme poner en la misma escala mis servicios en comparación con cualquier condición semejante. Por lo tanto, para poner este asunto y a mí mismo en el verdadero terreno del honor y para no ser incomprendido, he anexado dentro de esta nota secreta y privada una propuesta abierta y declarada de mis servicios, mediante la carta que dirijo a V. como persona pública.
