I send you the enclosed papers which I recd from your friend Mr Combray about six months ago in Paris. A singular train of accidents beset my Trunk which has been detained till of late at the Dover Custom House which is the cause why those papers were not sooner sent you—I regret the misfortune as these papers might have been usefull perhaps.—but it was one of these untoward circunstances which human foresight could not forsee.—As I carne over soon after the signing of the preliminary acticles I was obliged to tear of the cover from your letter that I might escape the fangs of the Custom house officers at Calais who were at that time excessively vigilant in the examination of the property of the few voyageurs

Envío a V. las cartas anexas que recibí hace unos seis meses en París del amigo de V., el señor Combray. Una serie de extraños accidentes hizo que mi baúl haya estado retenido en la Aduana de Dover hasta hace poco, lo que es causa de que estas cartas no hayan sido enviadas antes a V. Lamento el contratiempo, ya que estas cartas quizás hayan podido ser útiles, pero fue una de esas circunstancias adversas que la precaución humana no puede prever. Como vine pronto después de la firma de los artículos preliminares, me vi obligado a arrancar el sobre de la carta de V. para poder librarme de las garras de los Aduaneros en Calais, quienes, en aquella época, estaban excesivamente vigilantes en el registro de las cosas personales de los pocos viajeros
